What’s Your New Name?
Hello Friend,
It’s Mickey.
One of my favorite moments from Discovery: Together We Stand is when Hitori and Grider realize that they are renamed and called to be their new names by The Most High.
“At night, they sat by the fire.
“I still don’t know what my name will be,” Grider said, tossing a twig into the flames.
“I still don’t know what my name will be,” Grider said, tossing a twig into the flames.
He looked at her. “Do you think we’re ready?”
She hesitated. “Not yet. But we’re closer.”
….
The Most High Spoke; “You, who have walked through shadow and held fast to light—be named.”
He turned to Hitori.
“You are Beloved. For your heart is steady, and your love is fierce.”
Then to Grider.
“You are Steadfast. For you did not break, even when the world tried to bend you.”
The grove erupted in light.
Animals emerged once more—foxes, birds, deer, even a great owl that circled above. Flowers bloomed in their footsteps. The forest sang. “ (Excerpt taken from Discovery Series: Together we Stand Chapter 15)
This scene is especially meaningful because it reflects something true for every Christian. Before we come to Christ, many of us identify ourselves by our wounds, failures, fears, or the lies we have believed about ourselves. We may see ourselves as abandoned, forgotten, broken, or unworthy. But God does not define us by our past. He defines us by who He created us to be.
In the story, Hitori’s name represents isolation and being alone. Throughout much of her journey, that description fits her life. She believes she has been abandoned and forgotten. Yet when the Most High calls her Beloved, everything changes. She is reminded that she is known, seen, and deeply loved.
The same is true for Grider. His old identity is shaped by loss, confusion, and feeling misunderstood. Yet he is renamed Steadfast, a name that means firm, unwavering, and faithful. Instead of being defined by what happened to him, he is called to live in the person he was created to become.
This mirrors what God does throughout Scripture. God often gave people new names that reflected His purpose for their lives. Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah, and Simon became Peter. Their new names pointed to God’s plan, not their past.
I am reminded of Isaiah 62:2:
Nations will see your righteousness and all kings, your glory. You will be given a new name that the Lord’s mouth will announce.
And 2 Corinthians 5:17 says:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!
One of the themes woven throughout all of my books is the meaning behind names. I spend a great deal of time choosing character names because they often reveal the heart of the story. If you looked up many of my characters’ names, you would discover clues about the lessons they are meant to learn and the themes God is teaching through their journeys.
As I write, I try to remember that the names God gives us are never meaningless. His words carry purpose. His identity for us carries purpose.
Personally, one of the names I believe Christ has called me is Gift. If I’m honest, I still struggle to accept that sometimes. It can be much easier to believe the negative descriptions we place on ourselves than the beautiful truths God speaks over us. Yet whenever my heart grows heavy, I come back to that truth. God does not make mistakes. If He calls us beloved, chosen, redeemed, or gifted, then those words carry more authority than any insecurity, fear, or failure we can name.
The world may tell us who we were.
Our past may remind us where we have been.
Our past may remind us where we have been.
And His name for us is the one that matters most. 🩷
‘See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children — and we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it didn’t know him. ‘ (1 John 3:1)
Love,
